Goodness–of–fit Statistics and CMB Data Sets

Application of a Goodness–of–fit (GOF) statistic is an essential element of parameter estimation. We discuss the computation of GOF when estimating parameters from anisotropy measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), and we propose two GOF statistics to be used when employing approximate band– power likelihood functions. They are based on an approximate form for the distribution of...

Analysis Issues for Large Cmb Data Sets

Multi-frequency, high resolution, full sky measurements of the anisotropy in both temperature and polarisation of the cosmic microwave background radiation are the goals of the satellite missions MAP (NASA) and Planck (ESA). The ultimate data products of these missions — multiple microwave sky maps, each of which will have to comprise more than ∼ 106 pixels in order to render the angular resolu...

ROMA: a map-making algorithm for polarised CMB data sets

We present ROMA, a parallel code to produce joint optimal temperature and polarisation maps out of multidetector CMB observations. ROMA is a fast, accurate and robust implementation of the iterative generalised least squares approach to map-making. We benchmark ROMA on realistic simulated data from the last, polarisation sensitive, flight of BOOMERanG.

Cmb Anisotropy Power Spectrum Statistics

Much attention has been given to the problem of estimating cosmological parameters from the Cl measured by future experiments. Many of the approaches which are being used either invoke poorly controlled approximations or are computationally expensive. We derive exact results as well as fast and highly accurate approximations for mapping a theoretical model onto the observed power spectrum coeff...

Order statistics and estimating cardinalities of massive data sets

We introduce a new class of algorithms to estimate the cardinality of very large multisets using constant memory and doing only one pass on the data. It is based on order statistics rather that on bit patterns in binary representations of numbers. We analyse three families of estimators. They attain a standard error of 1 √ M using M units of storage, which places them in the same class as the b...
